Our Modern Digital Age and the Episode of Korach

What Caused the Earth to Split Open?

In this week’s parashah, we read about the severe punishment of Korach and his followers: “The earth opened its mouth.” Our Sages ask: why was such an unusual punishment chosen?

One explanation is that Korach used his mouth to create conflict, division, and slander against Moshe and Aharon. Therefore, the earth, so to speak, also opened its mouth. When the mouth is used for Torah, prayer, and acts of kindness, it builds worlds. But when it is used for strife, insults, and hurting others, it can bring tremendous destruction.

It is no coincidence that the Torah emphasizes that Moshe Rabbeinu did not respond with anger or shouting. His strength lay in a silence rooted in faith and trust. He understood that truth does not need to be shouted in order to endure.

In our own time, when words can be written and transmitted in an instant, each of us must ask ourselves: Does my speech bring peace or division? Do my words draw people closer together, or do they push them apart?

May we merit to sanctify our mouths with words of Torah, with prayer, and with words of kindness. Then the verse will be fulfilled for us:

“Who is the man who desires life…? Guard your tongue from evil.”

May we thereby merit peace, blessing, and a speedy redemption, speedily in our days. Amen.

Shabbat Shalom!
