The Power of Humility and Truth

A reflection just before the elections in Israel

We stand just before the elections in Israel. Parashat Korach teaches us a fundamental principle in the service of Hashem: not every dispute or struggle is truly for the sake of Heaven.

Korach claimed: “For the entire congregation, all of them are holy.” At first glance, his words appear correct. Yet the Torah reveals that behind these beautiful words lay a desire for honor and power.

Moshe Rabbeinu, in contrast, did not seek greatness for himself. When he heard Korach’s words, “he fell on his face.” That is the path of true holiness: humility, self-effacement, and trust in Hashem.

Many seek power, but the Torah teaches that true strength lies in the ability to subordinate one’s ego to the will of the Creator. The more a person elevates himself, the further he moves from truth; and the more he humbles his heart before Hashem, the more he merits true greatness.

Let us strengthen ourselves in these days before the elections in Israel to stay away from conflict and division, to pursue peace, and to ensure that all our actions are for the sake of Heaven. In this way, we will merit to be among the students of Aharon the Kohen—lovers of peace and pursuers of peace—and bring blessing and redemption upon all of Israel.

A blessed and peaceful Shabbat.
