Jewish! Studying and living the Torah.

During the Three Weeks—a period of mourning and introspection known as Bein HaMetzarim—we read the Torah portions that describe the division of the Land of Israel among the tribes

Our Sages (Chazal) deliberately arranged the annual Torah reading cycle so that during the Three Weeks—a time of mourning and reflection known as Bein HaMetzarim—the weekly Torah portions focus on the distribution of the Land of Israel among the tribes.

In this week’s parashah, we encounter the daughters of Tzelofchad, who courageously stand up for their father’s inheritance in the Land. Their reasoning is striking:

“For our father died because of his own sin.”

They understood that the Land of Israel itself possesses the power to purify. They recognized that the spiritual repair—the healing of their father’s failing—could be achieved through a connection to the Land.

Perhaps this is also why, during these weeks of destruction and exile, we repeatedly read about the conquest and settlement of the Land:

To remind us that Eretz Yisrael is not merely a country—it is a path to spiritual healing.

May we merit to reconnect with the Land in the deepest sense of the word, and through that bond be cleansed of all our sins.

If you’d like, I can also render this in a more literary American style suitable for publication or as a synagogue newsletter.
